The Urban Communities Project was contracted in 2011 by the Israeli developer Kora Angola through the National Urbanism and Housing Program of Angola (PNHU) for the conceptualization and proposal of 13 Urbanization Plans (Masterplans) in different provinces in Angola, totaling the provision of 40,000 housing units, elaboration of six architectural typologies, preliminary projects of Institutional Facilities, insertion of institutional facilities, as well as definition of urban infrastructure and green areas, such as parks and squares, with a total area of 10,200,000 m² (1,020 ha). In January 2021, Phase 2 of the Project was contracted, containing three Masterplans that total the provision of an additional 5,000 housing units, with a total area of 893,511 m². Within the Masterplan of each of the 16 contracted locations, the following were developed: (i) macro-drainage studies; (ii) proposition of the road system; (iii) location of housing; (iv) location of urban sewage and water services; (v) location of institutional services related to health, education and security; (vi) proposal of leisure areas such as parks and squares; (vii) urban design and general landscaping; (viii) detailed studies of furniture, toponymy and colors of the houses. The project considered the physical space derived from housing construction, imparting a sense of neighborhood and community by placing housing together with streets, commercial activities and institutional services, leisure areas and landscapes, which together compose the sense of living in the city. The formation of this “urban community” addressed the dimension of sustainability at two levels. By concentrating an ordered set, we enabled the optimization of networks (sanitation, communication, energy) and ensured the necessary density for its economic efficiency; and by promoting a diversified group - “community modules”, it allowed for the lower consumption of vital energy in the performance of routine activities of its residents, both in accordance with environmental constraints resulting in different territory occupancy designs. It brought together housing, work and leisure functions, ensuring shorter journeys - time savings - easy access to the demands of all city residents.
